Honey Facts

Honey is a 100% natural sweetener and is probably the oldest sweetener known to man. It predates recorded history and has been found in the Egyptian pyramids.

Honey comb is the most natural form of honey. From the comb, it can be spooned out & eaten, spread on toast, or cut out in chunks & placed in a jar to drain.

Honey is a natural antibiotic and antiviral.

Storing Honey

Honey is one of the few foods that never spoils. If not processed or stored properly, however, honey can darken and lose its flavor or aroma. When stored around 55 degrees it can form crystals & solidify.

  • If your honey crystallizes, it hasn’t gone bad. Just scoop out of the container and spread it on your toast or drop it in your tea!
  • To return crystallized honey to liquid form, gently heat the honey in warm water. Don’t heat over 140 degrees. To warm in a microwave, place in a microwave-safe container & remove the lid. Stir at 30 second intervals until crystals dissolve.

Instead of Table Sugar

Substitute honey for up to half of the sugar called for by a recipe. If used in baked goods, reduce the baking temperature by 25 degrees to prevent over browning. For each cup of honey used, reduce liquid by 1/4 cup and add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
